Raised by a French-teacher mother and a Department of Education official father, he grew up alongside three siblings in a culturally rich environment in Ballintemple, where he began writing and performing music by age ten.
Formative Trials Initially drawn to rock music, Murphy fronted several bands during his teens, most notably The Sons of Mr. Green Genes, which even turned down a major record deal. While studying law at University College Cork, his theatrical spark ignited after watching local stage productions, leading him to audition for the Corcadorca Theatre Company.
The Breakthrough In September 1996, Murphy made his professional acting debut in Enda Walsh’s acclaimed play Disco Pigs. The production toured internationally for two years, prompting him to leave university and music behind to fully commit to an artistic career on stage and screen.
Global Ascension Murphy achieved international recognition through standout roles in Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later, Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and his iconic portrayal of Tommy Shelby in the BBC television series Peaky Blinders.
